The rule first

The spine

The Erased thread traces the same machine wearing different names, city by city. A thread reads oldest first.

1. DENIED The second fire of Black Wall Street.
2. CLEARANCE Detroit's clean word for taking a Black neighborhood
3. REDLINE The map looked calm. The decades after it did not.
4. BLIGHT Mill Creek Valley was starved, then called blighted, then cleared.
5. ROBESON Penn's own collaborative history records the university's "heavy hand in Unit 3 planning." Before the 2026 vote to close a school named for Paul Robeson, a state representative named Penn.
6. ACTION PLAN Russell City was a town with a blues scene, a carnival, and a ladies' social club. The county froze it, starved it, and then found it blighted.
7. DESIGNATED Fourteen cultural districts existed in California before this one. None of them was Black.
8. SUBSIDIZED A sign on a brick wall in Mound Bayou reads MOUND BAYOU FOUNDATION. The federal caption filed with its photograph credited the town to a railroad company. A National Register nomination prepared in 1975 calls Isaiah Montgomery and Benjamin Green co-founders.
9. TRANSFER STATION Black Wide-Awake reports that freedmen founded a church outside Atlanta in early Reconstruction. The oldest marked grave in its cemetery, across the road, dates to 1871. A data center campus is rising around the cemetery now. A commission member told the council in August that ground-penetrating radar had been scheduled. Honor Thy Roots and a descendant asked for an independent archaeological investigation. No report on record says the radar has been run.

The fiction

Two invented properties stand beside the record, and both are fiction. Hooded Robin is serialized economic noir, told in dossiers. A Dozen Rifts is mythic fiction, told from inside a city that files its own decisions.
