The rule first

The spine

The Erased thread traces the same machine wearing different names, city by city. A thread reads oldest first.

1. DENIED The second fire of Black Wall Street.
2. CLEARANCE Detroit's clean word for taking a Black neighborhood
3. REDLINE The map looked calm. The decades after it did not.
4. BLIGHT Mill Creek Valley was starved, then called blighted, then cleared.
5. ROBESON Penn isn't the exception to the Black Bottom logic. Penn is the upgrade, and the city does not yet have a word for what that makes the university.
6. ACTION PLAN Russell City was not a slum. It was a town with a blues circuit, a carnival, and a ladies' social club. The county froze it, starved it, and then found it blighted.
7. DESIGNATED Fourteen cultural districts existed in California before this one. None of them was Black. The last time the state drew lines on this map, it ran a freeway through it.

The fiction

Two invented properties stand beside the record, and both are fiction. Hooded Robin is serialized economic noir, told in dossiers. A Dozen Rifts is mythic fiction, told from inside a city that files its own decisions.
