CLEARANCE

What it claims
The removal of unsound structures to make room for improvement. A tidying. A clearing of the way.
What it does
Black Bottom and Paradise Valley did not disappear. They were cleared through policy, plans, signatures, and asphalt.
The receipt
Detroit didn't demolish a slum. It demolished a community, then built a highway through the memory.

The Library files this frame under its record of the riot white neighbors mounted to stop the move-in; that title comes from a caption card and bundles the two, so we do not date this arrival to the mob. THIS IS NOT BLACK BOTTOM: it is a different Detroit, ten years earlier, and it is here because every photograph we held of Black Bottom itself turned out to belong to somebody else.

To clear a table is to leave nothing on it. That is the sense the word carries over, and it is why the word was chosen.

Detroit called it clearance, and clearance sounds like housekeeping. Hastings Street was Black Bottom’s business district, and the city built I-375 in its place.

Watch what the word does to the sentence. It takes an act with a hand behind it and turns it into a condition of the ground. Nobody clears. The land simply becomes clear.
