TikTok search filter — direct observation, 2026-08-19

Firsthand test, run 2026-08-19 from a logged-in desktop web session. Queries returning zero results and the notice “This phrase may be associated with hateful behavior. TikTok is committed to keeping our community safe and working to prevent the spread of hate”: negro leagues, negro leagues kansas city, negro leagues baseball museum (Video and Users tabs), Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in title case, united negro college fund, and negro spirituals.

Control query buck o'neil returned twenty four video results with no interstitial. Control query on the handle nlbmuseumkc returned the museum’s account, and the result card rendered its display name, “Negro Leagues Baseball Museum,” in TikTok’s own interface. The profile at tiktok.com/@nlbmuseumkc resolves directly: display name “Negro Leagues Baseball Museum,” 1,045 followers, 64 following, bio “National institution dedicated to preserving the rich history of black baseball.”

Not established by this test: whether the filter keys on the single word or on phrases containing it; whether the same behavior appears in the mobile app; whether TikTok has stated the behavior publicly. Screenshots of the blocked name search and the successful handle search are retained with the working file.

OBSERVATION LOG (append-only)

Run 1 — 2026-08-19, approx. 18:00–18:30 CT. Nine queries, logged-in desktop web. Seven blocked with the hateful-behavior interstitial (negro leagues, negro leagues kansas city, negro leagues baseball museum on both the Videos and Users tabs, the same name in title case, united negro college fund, negro spirituals). Controls passed: buck o'neil returned 24 videos; the handle nlbmuseumkc returned the museum’s account with its display name rendered in TikTok’s own result card. Run 2 — 2026-08-19, 22:24–22:27 CT. Re-test before publication, four hours after Run 1, fresh tab, same session.

• negro leagues baseball museum (Videos): BLOCKED, hateful-behavior interstitial, 0 results. Reproduces.
• buck o'neil (Videos): 23 videos, no interstitial. Control passes. (24 in Run 1; feed variance, not a finding.)
• Users tab: INCONCLUSIVE. Both the name query AND the handle control returned “Something went wrong. Sorry, something wrong with the server, please try again.” The endpoint was failing for everything, so nothing can be concluded from it in either direction. Recorded rather than discarded, because a check that could not run is not a check that passed.

What Run 2 establishes: the differential is not a one-off reading of a single moment. The same word blocks and the control clears, at two time points four hours apart, on the endpoint that was serving traffic.

RETEST PROCEDURE (for anyone, including future us)

1. Logged-in desktop web. Go to tiktok.com/search/video?q=negro%20leagues%20baseball%20museum.
2. Wait for the page to settle. Read what is on screen; do not infer from a text match alone. “Something went wrong” is a server error and means the test did not run.
3. Run the control in the same session: tiktok.com/search/video?q=buck%20o%27neil. If the control also fails, the run is inconclusive.
4. A finding requires both halves: the name query blocked AND the control returning results.
5. Screenshot both. Append a dated entry here. If the block ever stops firing while the control still passes, that is a follow-up dispatch, not a correction to this record.

Run 3 — 2026-09-02, 23:0x–23:1x CT. Re-test before publication, fourteen days after Run 1, logged-in desktop web session via browser automation. Run because the claim is a live-platform behavior and the essay had not shipped on its intended date; a platform-behavior claim cannot publish on a fourteen-day-old observation.

⭐ New in Run 3, not observed in Runs 1 or 2: on the blocked Users-tab search, the browser tab title itself reads “Find ‘Negro Leagues Baseball Museum’ on TikTok | TikTok Search”. The platform prints the phrase in its own page title on the very page that refuses the phrase as a query.

Still not established by this test (unchanged from Run 1): whether the filter keys on the single word or on phrases containing it; whether the same behavior appears in the mobile app; whether TikTok has stated the behavior publicly.

Scope note, added 2026-09-03 at the approval stage. All three runs are one researcher, one logged-in account (@thewordreimagined), one desktop browser. Also not established by this test: reproduction from a second account, from a logged-out session, or from a second region. The finding is N=1 on the operator side. It is reproducible over time; it has not been shown to be reproducible across accounts. A logged-out control run is owed and will be appended as Run 4 when performed.
