The Senator’s newsletter of December 19, 2025. Announces the California Arts Council’s unanimous vote to designate Historic South LA as California’s first Black Cultural District. Reports that the California Legislature approved $3 million in state funding to underwrite cultural markers and monuments for the district, and that while 14 cultural districts are established statewide, none represent historically Black communities. Quotes Aminah Muhammad, President of the Leimert Park Village Merchants Association: “This designation recognition is a step toward repair.” The year 2023, the $2.5 million and the partner list are not in this newsletter; see the Senator’s release of July 1, 2025 (smallwood-cuevas-south-la-designation-effort-2025) and LA Commons’ district page (la-commons-historic-south-la-black-cultural-district).
