Documents the Santa Monica Freeway (I-10) cutting Sugar Hill in half in the 1960s. The entirety of Berkeley Square, an affluent Black residential block, was swallowed by the project. Caltrans seized property through eminent domain fifteen years after residents won their 1945 legal battle against restrictive covenant enforcement. According to the LA Sentinel, the freeway could have been built without cutting through Sugar Hill; an alternative route through the fraternity and sorority row area around USC was rejected.
