Penn’s own archive on Paul Robeson’s persecution in the 1950s. Records that his passport was suspended; that the State Department forbade him “to travel even to Canada, the West Indies, or Mexico, none of which required a U.S. passport”; that he was, “in the parlance of the time, ‘contained’”; that “through the 1950s the federal district and appeals courts upheld the restrictions”; and that he appeared before HUAC in 1956 (this page says July; the printed hearing record dates his testimony June 12, 1956). The series summary says he spent the final decade of his life in West Philadelphia at 4949 Walnut Street.
