Trey Reed's Death, and Its Swift Labeling as Suicide

Demartravion “Trey” Reed, 21, a first-generation Black computer science major at Delta State University (a predominantly white Mississippi institution), was found hanging from a tree near the pickleball courts on campus, Cleveland, Mississippi, September 15, 2025. Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office ruled it suicide by hanging (released via Cleveland PD, Sept 17-18, 2025); the preliminary coroner’s report cited “no lacerations, contusions, broken bones, or injuries consistent with assault.” Family, represented by attorney Ben Crump and attorney Vanessa J. Jones, disputed the ruling, citing conflicting/incomplete information from authorities about even where the body was found (deputies reportedly first said his dorm room, later changed the location), and commissioned an independent autopsy. Unresolved as of the last reporting read (Oct 21, 2025); independent autopsy completed but results not public.
