ABANDONED

What it claims
Left behind by the people responsible for it, and therefore nobody's to answer for now.
What it does
Florida's 1998 law says dignity. It says affront. It says emotional trauma. It and a 2021 act passed with no recorded floor vote against them, and five apartment buildings stood on the cemetery site when the state reported in 2021.
The receipt
The words were never the problem. Florida wrote the better words, twice, and in 2021 buildings stood on the cemetery.
Detail of a colored 1922 fire insurance key map of Tampa. A grid of numbered blocks indexes the volume's sheets. At lower left a white parcel is drawn and lettered "Woodlawn Cemetery," bounded by Maine and Ola avenues, with the dashed city limits line running beneath it.

The word arrives after the leaving and describes only the leaving. No record in this file says who abandoned Zion. It was built on: a storefront, warehouses, and Robles Park Village. Call that abandonment and the sentence has no subject in it.

That is the work the word does. An abandoned cemetery is a condition, like weather. A cleared one has somebody who cleared it. Florida wrote a law that speaks of dignity and affront and emotional trauma, passed two acts with no recorded floor vote against them, and a county planner told its task force that, for local governments without a local ordinance, nothing required checking the state’s inventory of sites. Five apartment buildings still stood on the cemetery site when its task force reported.

Abandoned is what a record says when it has stopped looking for who was holding the deed.
