University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Campus Arboretum, Chaulmoogra Tree page: Alice Augusta Ball (July 24, 1892 to December 31, 1916); master's degree in chemistry from the College of Hawaiʻi in 1915; Ball's method made chaulmoogra oil water-soluble so the body could absorb it; injectable chaulmoogra oil remained the standard of care for nearly 30 years; after her death in 1916 at age 24 her work was credited to her supervisor and dean of the college; the tree planted in her honor in 1935 and the plaque installed circa 2000.
