New-York Daily Tribune, February 23, 1855, page 7, "A Wholesome Verdict": Jennings v. Third Avenue Railroad Company, tried in the Brooklyn Circuit before Judge Rockwell, who charged that "colored persons, if sober, well-behaved, and free from disease, had the same rights as others." The plaintiff claimed $500; the jury "agreed on $225, on which the Court added ten per cent. besides the costs."
