National Park Service, Biddy Mason
National Park Service biography of Biddy Mason: born August 15, 1818, died January 15, 1891; on January 21, 1856, District Judge Benjamin Hayes approved her petition, freeing her and thirteen members of her extended family; she organized First A.M.E. Church, the oldest African American church in Los Angeles.
